  • CU SAFE ALERT: Upstate Tropical Storm Warning Issued

CU SAFE ALERT: Upstate Tropical Storm Warning Issued

A Tropical Storm Warning means that sustained winds greater than 39 mph (34 kt) or higher associated with a tropical cyclone are expected in 36 hours or less.

The highest risks from TS Zeta include high winds and rains in the very early to mid-morning timeframe. Be prepared for possible impacts:

    • Individuals should be prepared for possible localized flooding, high winds, numerous downed trees and power outages.
    • Be safe when driving. Already saturated grounds and high winds can lead to downed trees and power lines.

University Main Campus/Greenville Open with Delayed Operations; Testing at Littlejohn Suspended

Clemson University officials continue to monitor weather conditions as Hurricane Zeta approaches the area. The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the Upstate, with increased risk of flooding and high winds through the morning hours for the Main and Greenville campus area.

All in-person and hybrid classes scheduled for main campus and Greenville for Thursday morning (until 12:15 p.m.) will be conducted entirely online. Employees are encouraged to work remotely if possible, and should work with their supervisors to adjust schedules to ensure safety if in-person work is required. Those employees with critical response and emergency responsibilities should report to work as scheduled.

For up-to-date weather forecasts please visit the Greenville/Spartanburg National Weather Service’s website and stay tuned to local media or NOAA weather radios.

  • CUPD: Three motor vehicle thefts reported in the last week

Three motor vehicle thefts have been reported over the past week — including one earlier today — to the Clemson University Police Department (CUPD).

Two vehicles were reported stolen from the South Carolina Botanical Gardens between September 25 and 28 and one between September 30 and October 1. At least two of the vehicles were left unsecured.

Stolen vehicles include a 2001 Chevrolet K2500, 1999 Chevrolet Blazer and a 1999 Ford F-150. CUPD is investigating.

CUPD urges the following crime prevention tips to properly protect your motor vehicle:

    • Do not leave keys inside your vehicle.
    • Park in well-lit areas.
    • Do not leave valuables in plain sight.
    • Immediately report any suspicious activity on campus to CUPD at 864-656-2222.

Issued in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a federal law originally known as the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, that mandates timely notices to the campus community. The Clery Act is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • President’s Update: Excitement building for classes next week and September return to campus

    Dear Clemson Family:

I am excited that we begin the fall semester next week. I miss seeing the incredible energy our students bring to the campus and can’t wait until they are back.

As you know, the first few weeks of the semester will be done online.  While this is not the way any of us wanted to start this academic year, I am extremely excited that students will be back on our campuses in full force shortly after Labor Day.

Our amazing faculty and staff have worked incredibly hard to create the conditions for a successful academic year, even as we continue to navigate the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. I am very proud of them for all their efforts.

At a time when many universities have decided to go completely online for the fall, I want to reaffirm to our students and their families that our focus on returning to in-person instruction and activities has never wavered. In fact, our decision to delay the start of in-person classes and on-campus activities by a few weeks has allowed us to further strengthen our return plans, and has put us in even better shape for a successful fall semester.

    TESTING STRATEGY

We continue to finalize a comprehensive COVID-19 testing strategy designed to minimize the number of cases at our locations and allow us to closely monitor the spread of the virus throughout the semester.

The early results from our COVID-19 testing have been encouraging: Over the past two weeks, we have received results from more than 1,100 employee and students and only seven people tested positive. The cumulative results of our testing can be found on our COVID-19 web site, which will be updated regularly.

We realize that testing, specifically the ability for our on-campus students to get a negative test result in timely fashion before moving onto campus, is a concern for some.  We are closely monitoring advances in testing and our plans may evolve. If so, we will communicate any changes as soon as they are made.

    COLLEGIATE SPORTS

Adding to my excitement is the fact that the ACC is on course to compete in football and other sports this fall. I have been heavily involved in the discussions among ACC presidents to ensure that we can play football and other sports safely, and we continue to follow the guidance of the conference’s medical advisory group. As result of the great work being done by universities across the conference related to testing and safety protocols, your No.1-ranked Tigers are prepared to start their season at Wake Forest on Sept. 12.

    CAMPUS HOUSING

Another date that I have circled on my calendar is Sept. 12 – the date our students can begin moving into the residence halls. Creating a strong and supportive on-campus environment is a critical part of the residential university experience, and our Clemson Home team is busy preparing our residence halls to operate at nearly full capacity. Answers to all your housing and dining questions can be found here.

This academic year is certainly going to look and feel a bit different than past years, but I am confident that we are poised to make it another great year for our students. At the same time, I continue to ask all of our students to do their part by wearing face coverings and practicing social distancing whenever possible. Remember, we’re all in this together. We need to remain “United as Tigers.”

Good luck to all of our students, faculty and staff as we start the semester next week, and stay tuned for regular communications from me and other University leaders as the new year begins. I am excited to see you all in a few weeks.

    Go Tigers!

    Jim Clements
    President

  • Clemson Introduces COVID-19 Test Result Upload Tool

Clemson University has launched its COVID-19 Test Result Upload Tool for students, faculty and staff to submit COVID-19 test results prior to return to Clemson facilities. All University employees and all students living in campus housing must provide a COVID-19 test result before returning to Clemson facilities. Details on employee and student testing requirements were announced previously.

The COVID-19 Test Result Upload Tool is designed for students, faculty and staff to submit test results from anywhere in the United States. After uploading a test result, clearance status will be determined and communicated to the individual via Clemson.edu email.

In addition to the upload resource, the University is providing, in coordination with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), multiple days of testing in the parking lot at NewSpring just west of main campus. Employees required to return to on-site work may register for a specific time slot HERE. Students will be able utilize the NewSpring site in the coming weeks. Individuals tested at the NewSpring location are not required to upload their test results, but can do so if they choose.

For employees and students unable to participate in testing at the NewSpring site, other free testing options exist in South Carolina through MUSC Mobile Testing Sites.

Submitted test results must include proper medical documentation containing your full name, date of birth, date of test, test result and type of test.

Students, faculty and staff members who have tested positive for, believe they may have been exposed to, or are ill with, the virus should review and follow the protocols on Clemson’s COVID-19 Medical Guidance page.

Everyone is encouraged to review up-to-date information from the University on its Healthy Clemson: United as Tigers COVID-19 information website.
